The CORE
The Center for Object Research and Engagement (aka The Core)
The CORE is an active, educational space featuring art from the museum’s permanent collection. On view is a wide range of works that span 5,000 years of history. Through study and appreciation, these works offer a portal to different time periods and cultures.
Object-Based Learning
The CORE offers an opportunity to slow down. To really get to know something, like a work of art, we must spend time with it. When visiting, we invite you to engage with the collection according to your own interests and desires.
Object-based learning (OBL) and research, a specialty of our work at the MSU Broad Art Museum, along with a variety of prompts and tools, will aid you in discovering the many possibilities that exist in The CORE.
The Collection
The MSU Broad Art Museum’s collection of over 10,000 works represents an inclusive array of artistic productions from the ancient to the present. This living collection continues to grow and diversify, with an emphasis on collecting the art of our time.
Ways to Engage
The CORE is home to a wide range of works that offer students direct interactions with art. Our staff is here to support your teaching and research needs. Whether you’re looking for a guided or self-guided visit, think of the MSU Broad Art Museum as an extension of your classroom. We’re excited to work with you—reach out to us at mccoolkr@msu.edu!
Collection Story
Have you wondered how the MSU Broad Art Museum’s collection grew to over 10,000 objects? The history of our collection is one that was shaped by numerous individuals, from faculty, staff, and community members to curators and museum directors, who saw the importance of art in our community.
Appraisals and Authentication of Artwork
Following the policies of the American Alliance of Museums, no MSU Broad Art Museum staff member may offer appraisals or authentications. There are many places that can assist you with researching your artwork and/or estimating its value.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a website for researching art, as does the Getty Center. To find an appraiser, please consult: Appraisers Association of America or International Society of Appraisers.
Conservation
The MSU Libraries, Conservation & Preservation Unit has a website addressing frequently asked questions along with a conservation referral list. Please visit lib.msu.edu/preservation for more.
