
Michigan State University engaged renowned architect and architecture and design critic Joseph Giovannini to facilitate a competition to select the architectural firm to design the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. Initially, 10 semifinalist firms were identified from a field of approximately 30 firms. In June 2007, a screening committee selected five finalist firms to submit competition proposals. The finalists came to campus in July 2007 to present their concepts for the building to the university, the public and a jury.
The charge to the architectural firms was to present a building design concept that would stand out from the traditional brick Gothic campus and serve as a symbol of the university’s trajectory into the future. At the same time, the development of the museum site was to honor the connection of old to new, incorporating mature specimen trees into a sculpture garden that will anchor the new building in its surroundings.
The five finalist firms represented a mix of established firms and emerging talents. They were:
